- Spoken word: If I was doing this project with older students, I would have also included modern, spoken word poets like Sarah Kay. Spoken word poems cover more mature, complex topics for which my 6th grade class was not quite ready.
- Timeline: I gave my students 3 days to complete this. Students were able to work diligently to complete this, but I had my students complete the poem creation about the poet (#5) on a separate day not included in the 3 days to prepare the presentation.
- Poem analysis: My APEX students had little difficulty analyzing the poem especially since we analyzed poems in class. For other students, I suggest creating a more detailed explanation of what is expected in the analysis AND scaffolding this by including many close readings of poetry in the classroom prior to the project.
