Introduction

PurPoseI spent a day introducing the misconceptions of poetry because sixth graders come to the language arts classroom with many negative feelings and thoughts towards poetry. I used this lesson to create student buy-in as a way to invest them for the remainder of the unit.
|
Lesson OverviewTo begin the lesson, I had students write what they knew about poetry. The common responses included Shakespeare, haiku, and rhyme. Then, I gave students one minute to write their feelings about poetry. The responses were very honest (which is what you want) and ranged from cartoon faces dying to "BORING" to "kinda cool." I spent the next part of the lesson introducing misconceptions through a Prezi. At the end of the lesson, I asked students to write down what they hoped to learn from the unit. Later, I was able to reference what they wanted to learn as I showed the purpose of each activity we did.
